Founded in 2003, Zanmi Timoun, meaning “Friends of the Children” works to protect Haiti’s restavek children and to eradicate the practice. From direct grassroots service provision to passage of national laws and international advocacy for children’s rights, Zanmi Timoun uses cutting-edge methodologies for deep social change.
Zanmi Timoun has an established program to rehabilitate children during and after child servitude, through accelerated primary school education, vocational training, direct service, legal assistance, and advocacy. ZT also develops vocational and managerial skills and guidance into the workforce. This encourages self-empowerment and economic independence. Steps may include counseling, mentoring, and access to small revolving funds to start sustainable businesses.
